この企画は、実際に現地に行ってみることの意義を実感できた旅だったと思います。多様な湯の価値や役割を知ることができた草津と湯屋への旅。貴重な経験でした。

This project itself was a journey through which I realized the significance of visiting the site. The visits to Kusatsu and Yuya, for example, revealed various values and roles of hot springs in Japan. It was a precious experience.

特に、今回の訪問では、歴史の中で「温泉」の定義が変わっていく様子を実感させられました。例えば湯屋温泉は、温度は低いけれど、入って病を治すことが期待されたので、温泉と呼ばれていたのです。興味深いですよね。

Specifically, these visits helped me realize how the definition of a "hot spring" (onsen) has changed throughout history. The temperature of Yuya Onsen is low, but it has been called "hot spring" because it was expected to cure diseases by soaking the body in it. How interesting!

それから、昔から飲泉として湯屋温泉が利用されていることも、印象的でした。それに対し、全国各地に弘法井戸こうぼういどと呼ばれている井戸があるのですが、その水は飲んで効能は期待されるけど、温泉と呼ばれたり、湯治場として発展したりはしませんでした。この違いは、やはり、その「水」につかり病を治すという文化が生まれなかったことにあるのでしょう。こう考えると、湯屋温泉は、長年にわたって飲む温泉でもあり、入る温泉でもあった。そこに、湯屋温泉の特異性があると言えますねえ。

Also, it was impressive that Yuya Onsen has been used as a drinking spring since long ago. In comparison, there are wells called Kōbō-ido in different parts of Japan, which have been expected to cure diseases by drinking their waters. Such waters, however, have not been called "onsen;" and these areas have not been developed as hot-spring cure facilities, either. This was probably because people did not take a bath with that water and be healed with it. Considering this, Yuya Onsen is unique in the way that it has been both a drinking spring and a spring for bathing for many years.

ところで、パンデミックが長引いていることもあり、なかなか現地に行けず、この記事を仕上げるのも長期戦になりました。でも、ご協力いただいた伊藤さんや奥田さんご夫妻をはじめ、様々な人々のサポートのお陰で、書き上げることができました。

By the way, due to the protracted pandemic, it was not easy to visit these places. As a result, it took a long time to finish this article. However, thanks to many people's support, especially that from Mr. Itō and Mr. & Mrs. Okuda, I was able to finish it.

伊藤さんとは、何度もオンラインで長時間にわたる打ち合わせをさせていただき、様々なアドバイスをご教示いただきました。それをもとに、感染拡大の波の合間を縫って、一度だけですが、2021年3月に一緒に草津温泉を訪問させていただき、記事のための現地調査や撮影をおこないました。

I had many online meetings with Mr. Itō, and he provided me with various advice. To gather information and materials for the article, both of us visited the Kusatsu Hot Spring and conducted field research and filmed videos. Our site visit "together" was only once in March 2021; we managed to get through repeated high outbreak waves when the infection number was low.

また、湯屋温泉の奥田さんご夫妻には、お忙しいところを史料を見せていただいただけでなく、薬湯作りの器具やキッチンも快く使わせていただきました。本当に感謝しております。

In addition, Mr. and Mrs. Okuda at the Yuya Hot Spring allowed me to view the scrolls even though they were extremely busy. They also willingly let me use the kitchen and necessary tools there for boiling down the spring water. I really appreciate it.
